Dr. Elizabeth Birnie was born and raised in California. She graduated from University of California at Davis Veterinary School in 1982. Dr. Birnie also received her MPVM (Masters in Epidemiology). She worked for the University of Florida for three years doing research on Heartwater, a tick-borne disease affecting livestock.

Dr. Birnie worked in Maryland at a mixed practice with a dairy emphasis. After several years there, she married her husband who was from New England and eventually moved to Deerfield, New Hampshire. When she first arrived to the area, she worked at Raymond Animal Hospital on a part-time basis but soon had two children. She was home with her two boys for a number of years until resuming work in a mixed practice. She rejoined Raymond Animal Hospital as a staff veterinarian in 2005.

In her spare time, she rides her horse and cross-country skis.
